Hacksaw Ridge (2016) Movie Review

Updated: Dec 30, 2022

“Please Lord, help me get one more. Help me get one more.”

Desmond Doss

Movies that are inspired by true events are always interesting to watch. Titles like The Social Network (2010) and Into the Wild (2007) have won a lot of praise and achievements for their success in portraying someone’s life. If you are looking for another inspired-by-true-event movie that is worth watching, Hacksaw Ridge is worth trying.

The movie Hacksaw Ridge tells us the life story of the World War II soldier, Desmond Doss. He was known for his incredible service in the Battle of Okinawa. Doss single-handedly saved 75 wounded soldiers, lowering them by the rope one by one on the edge of the cliff. What makes the story interesting is that Doss is no ordinary soldier, as a Seventh-Day Adventist, he holds tight to his religious beliefs and refused to touch any gun. His decision to avoid touching any guns made him go through a lot of struggles in his military training. However, due to his persistence, he made it to the field and even became a hero that deserves to be remembered.

The movie itself is directed by Mel Gibson. The main protagonist, Desmond Doss is played by Andrew Garfield. The movie started its plot by portraying Doss’s childhood to adolescence in Virginia in the 19s. It tells how Doss met his love, the nurse Dorothy Schutte which is the beginning of his introduction to the medical world. As every man enlisted to become a soldier, Doss also decided to become one, saying that he cannot stay still while everyone is fighting for his freedom. He concludes that he will become a medic, he wants to save people, not kill them. His decision to enlist as a soldier was opposed by many people that know him, starting from Dorothy, to his father who is a former World War I soldier. His strong belief in his religious state and decision to refuse to touch any weapon made him struggle in the army. Long story, he made it to the battle of Okinawa and did the impossible. His act made him become the first conscientious objector to win a Medal of Honor.

I highly recommend you watch this movie. Hacksaw Ridge is a movie with rich religious points wrapped in a war-action setting. The plot is great and detailed and the iconic scene of Doss’s process of saving his comrades is portrayed perfectly by Andrew Garfield, enough to make you shiver from amazement. If told to rate this movie from 1 to 10, I would give an 8 for this movie. If you are interested to watch the movie, Hacksaw Ridge is available on Netflix.
