Over decades, playing games is still one of the most common ways for people to spend their leisure time. In 2022, you can easily see what game is currently hyped simply by going into streaming platforms such as Twitch. People usually play popular game genres, take an example such as shooter games, there are big names like Valorant, Apex Legends, Fortnite, and more. Some people also choose to play more ‘chill’ games such as Minecraft and Terraria. Among all of the popular game genres, most of the time horror-themed game is not as popular as the others. However, the game Phasmophobia has made an exception for itself.
Phasmophobia is a survival horror game that was released back in September 2020. What makes it different from other horror games is that Phasmophobia is an online game which can be played by up to 4 players. This is probably the selling point of the game as people enjoy being scared together and having fun running from ghosts with their friends.
The goal of Phasmophobia is pretty simple. Your role in this game is a ghost hunter, at the start of the game, you will be spawned in a truck with multiple tools. These tools will help you on your journey as a ghost hunter. What you need to do is just go inside the hunting place (the haunted house), find clues about the ghost with the provided tools, and guess what type of ghost you’re dealing with. The game actually feels like a detective game.
Although it sounds simple, new players are frequently confused about what should they do with the tools. Through this post, I have summarized everything you need to know about the starter tools in Phasmophobia.
1. Spirit Box: This tool is used to communicate with ghosts. To use it, you should make sure that the lights around you are turned off. Activate the Spirit Box, and start talking, there are many questions you can ask such as ‘Are you here?’, ‘How old are you?’, and many more. If the ghost reply, the little ghost icon on the bottom right will light up, and you have found your ghost room. If the ghost doesn’t reply, it is either you have not found the room yet, or the ghost is not the type that interacts with Spirit Box.

2. Ghost Writing Book: This book is used to attain ghost interactions in form of writing. To use it, you only need to put it (It should be in the ‘open’ position if you have used it correctly) inside the ghost room. If you placed this book in the correct ghost room, there is a chance that the ghost will interact with it and leave a mark for you to identify.

3. EMF Reader: This colorful tool works like a metal detector, but for a ghost. It possesses 5 colors as its indicator, starting with blue as the lowest level, and red as the highest level (level 5). If your EMF Reader reached the highest level, you can mark EMF reader as one of your clues. EMF Reader works the same whether by putting it on the floor or holding it in your hand.

4. UV Flashlight: The UV Flashlight is used to search for fingerprints or footprints of the ghost you’re dealing with. After every ghost interaction, try to flash the UV light around the doors or windows of the ghost room. If you’re lucky, there is a chance that you will find a green mark that you can mark as one of your clues.

5. Flashlight: Flashlight works as your source of light. In Phasmophobia, the ghost loves to play with you by turning off the light switch or the fuse box. Holding a flashlight is a necessary thing as you will need your vision to know where you are inside the haunted house.
6. Video Camera: Video Camera works as a CCTV. It will provide you with a vision based on where you placed it. The camera is connected to your truck, so you can observe the haunted house through your truck’s computer. The camera can also detect a ghost clue called ‘ghost orb’. If you see a flying small circle that looks like snow, you may want to mark it as a ghost orb clue.
7. Photo Camera: Unlike the Video Camera, which is used as an observation tool, the Photo Camera is a tool you use to take pictures of your findings in the game. It can be ghost interaction evidence, a cursed item, or even the ghost itself. Make sure you prioritize the things you want to capture as the Photo Camera only has five shots per camera.
8. D.O.T.S Projector: The projector is a tool to detect movement. When you put this thing down on the floor, it will radiate a green light all around the room. People usually use D.O.T.S Projector in front of the Video Camera. If the ghost passes around the tool, you can see it. If that happens, the D.O.T.S Projector can be marked as one of the ghost clues.
