Have you ever been confused about how to order something inside a food place? It was exactly what happened to me when I was a kid. This happened when I was trying to buy a cup of coffee at one of the most known coffee shops. I had never ordered a coffee alone for myself before. When going here with my friends, I never really noticed how they do the order. All I did was told my friend what I wanted to order, give the money, and voila, I had my cup of coffee. One time, I decided that I wanted to go there by myself and try to order my coffee alone.
The doubts came from the fear that I would be looked at like a fool. I was a really shy person, and ordering a coffee at the coffee shop seemed to be a really complicated thing to do because they had lots of customizations for their customers. They had multiple types of drinks, variants, sizes, and lots of small things like how many shots you want in your glass. I feared that when I got asked these questions by the barista, I would freeze in confusion and be too shy to ask questions which, as I said, would make me look like a fool.
So, before going there, I did my ‘research.’ I went to Google and found the thread I needed. It was a comedic but insightful post created by one of the Twitter users about his experience when ordering a coffee from the same coffee shop I wanted to go to. After successfully buying the coffee without any problem, thanks to the thread I read earlier, I had this thought to myself, “Why don’t I make this kind of writing myself?” looking back to the thread, it seemed that lots of people have the similar problem like me, and they needed the posts like the thread I read earlier. And so, it was the beginning of my interest in writing.
I once joined the journalistic club at my school during my high school year. There, I learned the basics of writing and created my first ever personal blog on the blogger. I did not write much back then. The reason was that I had no idea what I wanted to write. Even though the club usually provided us with topics to write on, I think I had lost my curiosity then.
However, even though I did not write, I was still interested in reading people’s blogs. I put my interest in the writings of public figures such as Kevin Anggara and Raditya Dika. Their writings were daily blogs written in a humorous tone, which was the reason why it was interesting to read. I used to wish that I wanted to be a writer like them.
In the final year of high school year, like many kids of my age, I found myself that I was really into playing games. I would play every day with a friend of mine, spending hours and hours at night in front of my computer before going to sleep. The same still happens these days. Since the game I played was an online game, I found that many new players were struggling when they just started the game. The problem which almost similar to my coffee-ordering problem. The answer to the problem was the same, too, I found that many blogs posted information to help these new players.
Time went by, and it was time for me to go to university. I decided that I would join the English literature major at Bina Nusantara University (Binus). The story from my cousin, who was also an alumnus of this major at Binus, solidified my choice in choosing this major. As the years went by, I learned much more about writing and many interesting things related to literature.
In my fourth semester, I chose to join the Creative Writing and Media streaming. Looking at the current state, if I have the chance to work, I think I would like to be a journalist for a company. I guess I have lots of interests and hobbies, and I would love to share what I know about them with many people. For example, my love for playing games. I would enjoy writing tips to help other players with the game I played. If the game is a competitive game such as Valorant, Apex, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and DotA2, there are lots of things I can share from the competitive scene. Things such as the transfer of the players, accomplishments of a team, or issues around the community are always interesting things to share. Huge gaming media companies, such as the IGN entertainment video productions, theScore esports, and local gaming media, such as The Lazy Esports, are where I wish I could work later. I would put video game journalism as the first thing I want to be good at in the future related to creative writing.
Apart from video game journalism, I also have an interest in telling stories about places I visited. I felt that oftentimes, lots of great places are still not discovered and highlighted thoroughly by the media. Although I am not a person who always travels to places, when I do, I love to capture photos and take notes and jot down my opinion on my phone notes. Recently, in this fourth semester, I had the chance to write some travel writing. It was a fun experience for me to write details and my journey along the way, especially by using the narrative method I learned, which provided my readers with to feeling of the place I was in. Of the things that I learned in class, I also wish that I would be more active in producing writing for my personal blog. My goal, for now, is to build a good portfolio filled with my own writings that can be useful for my future.
